"Las Fallas", or "Les Falles" in Valencian, is a celebration that takes place throughout the whole community of Valencia in March. Fallas is the name of the whole festival, but also the name given to the temporary sculptures which are the origin of the celebration. Each year, Fallas artists spend months crafting enormous figures and scenes out of wood, paper, and polystyrene, only for them to be burned after a week of presentation in the city.
There is a long and specific tradition of music to be played during the month of Fallas. Small local marching bands parade the streets playing "pasodobles festeros" by memory. See the Fallas Playlist for the most common songs!
The Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música Ciudad de Valencia (International Wind Band Contest "City of Valencia") is a Competition of huge importance for the amateur bands of the city and elsewhere. The winner of each category gets a cash prize to be used within their music society, and winning a Certamen is a huge honour and recognition for the conductor and band.
In the Fonoteca Virtual of the CIBM, you can find all the recordings of previous Certamens. You can search for a piece, composer, band or conductor, or simply search any year to see and listen to everything that was played!
Another important festival in the Valencian community is "Moros y Cristianos". Inspired by the musical influence that Arabic nations have had on Valencia, the people of Valencia pick to dress up either as Christians or Arabs, and play music composed specifically for one or the other.
Due to this festival, two important Valencian genres have emerged: La Marcha Mora (example) and La Marcha Cristiana (example). Each type of march has its own specific characteristics. To see the full spectacle of the festival, watch here!
In Valencia, each town will have its own "fiestas" every year, on the Saint's Day for that place or church. Marching bands will play Pasodobles Festeros (pasodobles specifically written for parties). Many of these will overlap with the pasodobles played in Las Fallas.
In Valencia, bullfighting is also still legal, and many of the famous pieces of Valencia are Pasodobles Taurinos (specifically written for bullfights).
The group "Obrint Pas" (above) are known for using the Valencian folk instrument the dolçaina in their songs.
