Tokisho Akiyoshi talks with Fred Bouchard for the Berklee Archives Oral History Project
Akiyoshi is a jazz pianist, composer/arranger, and bandleader. She was Berklee’s first Japanese student and one of its earliest female graduates (1959). She also received an honorary degree from Berklee in 1998.

Summary: Poignant documentary about an extraordinary woman, artist Estelle Ishigo, one of the few Caucasians to be interned with 110,000 Japanese Americans in 1942. When internment came, Ishigo refused to be separated from her Japanese-American husband, and lived with him for four years behind barbed wire in the desolate Heart Mountain camp in Wyoming. During internment, the artist recorded the rigors of camp life with unusual insight, depicting the internees' struggle to keep dignity and hope alive.

Documentation of the development of jazz in the Philippines, from its infancy in 1898, when Filipinos were first exposed to Black music performed by African-American soldiers, to its present day maturity in which musicians are turning to indigenous sources for inspiration.
