"Many Americans refrain from talking about sexual orientation and gender expression identity because it feels taboo, or because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. This glossary was written to help give people the words and meanings to help make conversations easier and more comfortable" (Human Rights Campaign).

  • Contemporary Theories of Sexual Orientation: Traditional theories on sexual orientation have argued for biological causation and then focused on finding evidence for this perspective in physiological and psychological studies. While some evidence suggests that biology may play some small role in sexual orientation development, theorists recognize the complex interplay between nature and nurture in the formation of both gender orientation and sexual orientation. After a discussion of research on gender orientation, this article presents a multidisciplinary review of the literature on sexual orientation development. As greater professional and public acceptance of homosexuality and bisexuality emerge in our culture, our awareness of the wide diversity of sexual expression is expanding.
  • Transgender psychology: In recent years, increasing attention has been paid in popular media as well as scholarly discourse to individuals who identify as transgender or gender-nonconforming. This growing visibility has coincided with more opportunities for trans people to be “out” about their transgender status. With transgender-identified people increasingly able to publicly disclose their identity and describe their experience in public domains, attention and visibility have resulted in greater widespread awareness of gender diversity.
